2. Strings Commonly made of wood and strings (usually four). Played by drawing a bow across the strings or plucking the strings. Examples: violin, viola, cello, and bass.

4. Woodwinds Played by blowing into them and creating notes with the fingers on keys that cover holes in the instrument. They can be made of wood or metal. Ex: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, and Bassoon.

6. Brass Instruments are made of metal. Played by “buzzing” the lips on the mouthpiece; the sound is adjusted with a slide or valves. Ex: Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, and Tuba.

8. Percussion Anything not otherwise classified. Mostly played by hitting the instrument with drumsticks or beaters. Ex: Drums, Cymbals, Bells, Wood Blocks and Whistles.
