2 IB Mission Statement The IB is a not-for-profit foundation, motivated by its educational mission, focused on the student. Mission Statement The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. The programs encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

6 IB Diploma Programme Curriculum Model
Six subject areas An extended essay of 4,000 words Experiential learning through creativity, action, service (CAS) Theory of Knowledge (TOK), a course that fosters critical thinking. The programme is presented as six academic areas with three core requirements enclosing the student at the center. It encourages the concurrent study of a broad range of academic areas. Students study: two modern languages; a humanities or social science subject; an experimental science; mathematics; and one of the creative arts. Three core elements – the extended essay, theory of knowledge and creativity, action, service – are compulsory and central to the philosophy of the program.

IB Students are held to separate graduation requirements They receive a waiver from the standard graduation requirements so that they may focus on the IB Curriculum The IB Curriculum mimics the general education requirements of colleges and universities

9 Core Curriculum Requirements

10 Pre-Diploma Sequence of Courses
All courses in ninth and tenth grades are part of the Osceola School District’s Pre-Diploma Program. Ninth Grade: Pre-IB English I Geometry Honors Biology Honors AP World History Pre-IB Foreign Language Inquiry Skills Elective Tenth Grade: Pre-IB English II Algebra II Honors Chemistry Honors AP European History or AP US History Pre-IB Foreign Language 2 Electives -Two-year intensive academic program that prepares students for successful transition into the IB Diploma Programme -Building the fundamentals for in-depth study of six core academic areas

13 IB Assessment Six exams administered in 11th and 12th grades
Assessment includes both external examinations (approx. 75%) and internal assessment (approx. 25%) including a variety of tasks that emphasize higher-order cognitive skills Exams and assessments scored globally Marks awarded for each subject range from 1 (lowest) to 7 (highest) with the potential to earn college credit for exam passes IB Diploma is awarded to students who meet IB criteria including exam results, TOK, Extended Essay, and CAS

Many students qualify for Florida Academic Scholars Award based solely on IB Diplomas

The IB Organization works closely with universities in all regions of the world to gain recognition for the IB diploma: Recognition in over 100 countries Recognition by over 2,000 universities Scholarships and advanced placement for IB students in some universities Florida colleges award credit for all IB exam scores of 4 or better Waiting for Bob’s updated 2012 numbers

16 IB students more likely to attend selective colleges
In a 2012 study of diverse alumni from IB programmes in Chicago public schools, researchers from the University of Chicago found that, compared to a matched sample, DP students are more likely to: enroll in college attend a more selective college stay enrolled in college. Key messages about the IB, and college admission and enrollment: IB students have a better chance of getting into college IB students are accepted at selective and highly selective universities college admissions officers recognize IB students as having chosen the most challenging academic options. In 2012, researchers from the University of Chicago compared a sample of 1888 diverse students who participated in the Diploma Programme in Chicago public schools graduates to similarly high achieving Chicago public schools peers who did not participate in the IB DP. The study found that IB DP students are more likely to attend a more selective college and are more likely to persist in college for more than two years. 17 IB students graduate from college at higher rates
The 2011 study of IB students’ experiences after high school found that IB students graduated from college at higher rates, with 81% of IB students graduating within 6 years of enrolling full-time at a 4-year institution, compared to the national average of 57%. In the 2011 SRI International study of the post-secondary outcomes for nearly 25,000 Diploma alumni, researchers found that at institutions with high IB enrollments, graduation rates for IB students were generally higher than the institutional average. Overall, 81% of IB students graduated within 6 years of enrolling full-time at a 4-year institution, compared to the national average of 57%. FSA Reading and Math, Grade 7 Student GPA , Grades 6th – 8th Teacher Inventory Successful completion of Algebra I Successful completion of 8th grade curriculum Completed and timely application submitted to the appropriate school

22 Application Process Students must complete all pages of the application form. Make sure to indicate which Pre-Diploma Program the student is zoned to attend. The application must be signed by the student and a parent or guardian.

24 The Pre-Diploma Application
The essay will help us get to know the student better and familiarize students and parents with the IB Learner Profile. Signature verifies that the essay is the student’s original work.

25 Teacher Inventory Form Due to Guidance Counselor with completed Application by February 22nd All documents due to the high school by March 11th

26 Integrity Standards Students are expected to conduct themselves in an honorable manner while on campus or at school-sponsored events. Students and parents will sign the IB Honor Code to which students are held. Unweighted cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) must remain at a 2.75 or higher.

27 Osceola County Attendance Zones
Attendance zones for the Pre-Diploma Program have been determined by the school district. Out-of-zone waivers are not granted for the Pre-Diploma Program. Transportation is provided for students within the Pre-Diploma Program zone. Carpooling can help with the early start time and after school activities.

28 To Sum Up . . . Applications are due to the Middle School by
February 22th and the High School IB Office by March 11, 2016. You don’t have to be a genius to gain an IB diploma but . . . You do need to be organized, able to plan your work schedule, work hard, study smart and effectively, and get involved in a range of activities, including those that offer a break from academic work. Make the time to relax and enjoy yourselves AFTER you have done your academic work.
