1 ESL 11B Class structure and student requirements

2 In entering this class, students should be… Able to write grammatically correct sentences that are short and long. Read and understand meaning of new words from context. Able to write a paragraph with a topic sentence and supporting details and be able to revise/correct errors. Able to listen to passages and determine the meaning through context clues.

3 Your Teacher’s Job Come to class prepared with clear objectives. Clarify and explain any confusing concepts. Encourage students to express relevant ideas in class. Evaluate student work (writing, tests, homework) to see if it’s satisfactory to the course objectives. Provide suggestions for extra helpful classes or tutoring.

4 Optional Supporting Classes ESL 14A/B: Pronunciation and Spelling (2 units) ESL 15: Conversation and Culture in U.S. (2 units) ESL 16A: The Noun System and Articles (1 unit) ESL 16B: Using Verb Tenses (1 unit) ESL 16C: Sentence Structure and Punctuation (1 unit) ESL 17: Intermediate Reading Skills (3 units)

5 A Good Student Works hard both in class and at home Pays attention in class and takes notes Knows the paragraph and essay format Never plagiarizes Does not translate while writing Understands the assignment prompts Asks the teacher questions when he/she doesn’t understand

6 Class Rules Cell phones should be off and put away. No electronic dictionaries allowed in class. English only in class. Late papers will not be accepted. Cheating on assignments will result in a 0 and being reported for academic dishonesty.

7 Other Helpful Advice Get the contact information of one or two classmates in case you don’t know the homework for the next class. Contact the professor if you don’t understand her comments/marks on your paragraphs or essay. Meet with her during office hours (and bring the assignment). Schedule an appointment with ESL tutoring for more writing help.
