1 Oceans & Atmosphere Unit 6 Notes

2 What is the difference between waves, currents, and tides?
“I WiLL” compare and contrast waves, currents, and tides!

3 Day 1 Notes Waves: Disturbances that travel through a medium (space and matter). Currents: Move Left to Right or in circles Driven by rise and fall of Tides Winds drive (surface) currents thermohaline circulation - a process driven by density differences in water due to temperature (thermo) and salinity (haline) in different parts of the ocean. Tides: move up and down (rise and fall of sea level) driven by the gravitational force of the moon and sun and rotation of the earth

4 Day 1 Notes Ocean Gyre: any large system of rotating ocean currents, particularly those involved with large wind movements. Gyres are caused by the Coriolis Effect Tidal Cycle: High’s and low’s over a given time. Semidiurnal or semi-day- 2 highs and 2 lows about the same height Mixed semidiurnal- if the high and low tides differ in height. Diurnal – only 1 high and 1 low Spring Tide vs. Neap Tide

5 Day 1 Activity Study Jamz Videos: Tides, waves & currents Pretend the classroom is the ocean and you each are droplets of water. Demonstrate a wave moving through a current, tides: ocean gyre, and a tidal cycle. Complete Page 427: #’s 1-6 AND page 453, #’s 1-5 (Due BY Friday)

6 What causes deep currents? What causes surface currents?
I Will Model how differences in density cause convection currents. I Will Determine which way the Coriolis Force deflects currents in the Northern and Southern hemispheres.

7 Day 2 Notes Surface Currents: Pushed along from the wind and the coriolis effect. affect weather and climate. Coriolis Effect: The effect of the earth’s rotation that causes the wind to move in a curved path. Current flows toward Great Britain in the Northern Hemisphere. Deep Currents: moved by temperature and saltiness (salinity) The worldwide circulation of water that is based on density is known as the thermohaline current.

8 Day 2 Activity Modeling the coriolis effect
How do oceans & atmosphere interact / Ocean current & climate Handout Begin DO surface currents affect climate?

9 Day 3 Notes: Affects on Climate
Due to the Coriolis effect the gulf stream affects the climate of great Britain. The rising of cold water from deep layers the replace warmer surface water is called Upwelling. Water has a high specific heat which is why the temperature of ocean water relatively stays the same all year.

10 Day 3 Activity Vocabulary Review Vocabulary Quiz
Complete Page 427: #’s 1-6 AND page 453, #’s 1-5

11 Day 4 Notes: Layers of the Atmosphere
Troposphere: temp decreases, weather happens Here (10% bad ozone) Stratosphere: Temp increases- due to ozone layer capturing UV radiation (90% Good Ozone) Mesosphere: temp decreases, decease in solar heat. Thermosphere: temp increases, solar lights, space shuttles orbit

12 Day 4: Activity Complete the graphing Handout – Layers of the Atmosphere

13 Day 5 Notes: Heat transfer & Ozone
Conduction: transfer of heat from one object to another through touch. Convection: transfer of heat from one place to another through circulation. Radiation: radiant energy that is emitted by an object.

14 Day 5 Activity Day 6 Activity
Heating of the Earth Handout Begin Ozone activity Handout- Webquest on line Test review Handout Complete all remaining assignments If time- modeling ocean currents and flow activity
