2 Independence for India 1600: English East India Company founded Quickly set up trading posts on India’s southern and eastern coasts. 1760: Britain takes control of India. Company controls most of India Indians distrusted the British and disliked being controlled by them.

4 Independence for India Nationalist: Movement that began to fight for their independence Wanted to protect their culture Britain offered National Congress ruled by Indian Leaders Gandhi After WWII Britain no longer has enough money to keep India under its rule 1947: India becomes independent

6 Mohandas Gandhi Used passive resistance - non-violent strategies to demand Indian self-rule. Boycotting British cotton 240 mile walk to the ocean to oppose British Salt tax Strikes: day of prayer and hunger strikes

9 The sale or production of salt by anyone but the British government was a criminal offense punishable by law. Salt can be found in coastal area, but Indians were forced to pay for it. The British ended up imprisoning over 60,000 people, including Gandhi, for collecting salt. The British monopoly on the salt trade

14 At the end of WWII Vietnam was a nation of France. – Ho Chi Minh Vietnam Communist Party leader 1945 Declared independence from France Created the Viet Minh (guerrilla army) to fight the French 1954 French were defeated after 9 years of unsuccessful attacks 1955 Vietnam was an independent nation. Free from French Rule.

17 North VS South Korea North Korea wanted to unite all of Korea under communism – North Korea Opens fire south of the 38 th Parallel. The United States did not want Communism to spread to South Korea. – USA and other UN Forces became involved to protect S. Korea and stop spread of Communism – Troops went all the way to the Yalu River. Chinese troops aided N.Korea in pushing them back below the 38 th Parallel

18 Korean War Once US and UN forces regained control South of the 38 th Parallel….. – Stalemate was declared on July 27 th, 1953 Korea would remained divided at the 38 th Parallel

21 Vietnam was divided at the 17 th Parallel North Vietnam –Led by Ho Chi Minh Wanted Vietnam to be communist South Vietnam –Led by Ngo Dinh Diem Anti-communist Vietnam War

23 1955: Vietnam is divided into Two parts Ho Chi Minh created the Viet Cong to fight against the anti- communist south. 1964 US becomes involved by helping South Vietnam fight Communist North Vietnam Many US citizens protested US involvement. 1973: US troops withdraw from Vietnam Conflict ends in a tie, However six years later North Vietnam took over South Vietnam and the country was united Communist
