How can I be a good Student-Teacher?  Always speak in English!  Speak slowly, clearly and loudly!  If a student gets it wrong, help them to try again.  Offer encouragement:

How do I read books with the students?  Ask at least one question per page:  What is the title of the book?  Who is the author/illustrator?  What can you see?  What is this?  What is the ___ doing?  How many ___ are there?  Point to the ___.  Where is the ___?

How do I read books with the students? (cnt’d)  Motivate your students! DON’T  Hold the book/read/turn the pages for them.  Simply tell them the words they do not know.  Get angry or impatient with them when they cannot read fluently. DO  Encourage them to handle the book with care.  Ask them if they know the letter sounds and help them to sound out the word.  Support them by pointing to pictures and giving them time!

The best Student-Teacher…  Always asks lots of questions about the story to make the student more interested in it…  Reminds the student to track the text with his/her finger…  Helps the student “decode” words by reminding him or her to sound words out, look at the picture for a clue, and think about what would make sense…  Shows a variety of expressions on his or her face and uses different intonation to ensure that the student doesn't feel bored…  Can be firm but gentle in making sure the student does not misbehave and concentrates on the task…  Encourages the student to speak using full sentences…

Helping students with worksheets…  D ON’T just give them the answers! Explain the task to them by reading aloud the instructions. Help them to pronounce any words they have trouble with. If they make mistakes, encourage them to re-check their work by asking “Are you sure that’s right?” Ask questions to make them think instead of telling them the answers. Be patient even if they are slow or need you to repeat things – just remember, you were once like them, too! Be kind when you mark their work and give them lots of praise!
