Learners are supplied with documentation on storage requirements and weighing practice for raw materials 1.In a facilitated group discussion all the major functions of a woodyard is listed 2.Learners develop a layout sketch of an “ideal” woodyard indicating all processing equipment, storage layout, office / control work-stations and the flow of various transport options 3.Specific storage and weighing practice requirements are highlighted for each of the raw materials. A checklist is drawn up for weighing practice. 4.Layouts and checklists are presented and discussed

Information on material and equipment properties are used in discussions to clarify debarking and chipper practice. 1.Learners are supplied with documentation describing processed material properties and specifications. 2.Raw material samples are viewed and properties discussed 3.The properties and specifications of each type of processed material are listed and explained in a table 4.Learners use basic information on bark properties to discuss the pros and cons of insufficient debarking or the over stripping of bark 5.Different reclaiming equipment options are discussed and evaluated 6.Results are provided in a short report Complete a questionnaire

Process, material and product variations are discussed 1.Learners use the woodyard diagram developed and number each piece of equipment. Equipment names, functions and typical locations of each piece of equipment is presented to the group 2.A checklist is compiled of log sheets, records and reports used in a woodyard 3.Process and material variables are tabulated against their impact on other processes and products. 4.Suggestions of how to compensate for each of these deviations are facilitated in a group discussion and added to the table 5.The document is prepared for assessment Educational games

Typical ranges and results for various types of raw materials are supplied. 1.Learners are given an overview of statistical sampling which is integrated into woodyard sampling practice. A typical sampling procedure is outlined. 2.Students use previously gained information to produce a table of product quality requirements and the reasons for each requirement 3.A range of acceptable test results for each material type are added to this table. The impact of deviations on downstream processes and products are listed 4.Draft a report with all the applicable results

Specific standards, equipment requirements and procedures are noted 4.A short presentation of the findings is made. 5.A questionnaire is completed to show understanding of environmental issues Notional Hours 8 Relevant OHS Act section is studied The group brainstorm and list potential hazards in a woodyard. Learners make recommendations to prevent, reduce or contain damage for each of the hazards.
