Threats to peace in Asia Pacific Region  Rise of Facist Japan  Failure to Re-establish peace after WWl  Japan’s foreign policy aims between 1931-1941 Building an empire in the Region Free Asians from Western control Lands for Japan’s growing population Gain control of more resources

Causes of Asia Pacific War USA-Japan Relationship >Worsening relations in 1930 >Breakdown of talks in 1941 Tojo became PM >Aggressive foreign policy Economic situation > War in China International Situation >Japan’s agreement with USSR

Chinese Army Japan Army in Manchuria Japan’s growing population Needed more land & resources Build an empire in the Asia Pacific Region Free Asian from Western control Marco Polo Bridge Incident

 Neutrality Agreement between USSR & Japan > prevented Japan from fighting on 2 fronts > war between USSR & Japan was less likely > provided chances for attack in Southeast Asia  War in Europe > Western powers busy with war in Europe > Western powers were not able to defend their colonies > Southeast Asia became vulnerable

 Removed leaders who supported negotiations with USA  Strongly supported aggressive Foreign Policy  Felt that USA Pacific fleet was a threat to Japan  Therefore, war with USA could not be avoided  Ordered Admiral Yamamoto to attack Pearl Harbour Hideki Tojo Admiral Yamamoto

 Japan saw USA as a threat to their foreign policy > Mukden Incident, 1931 > Japan’s expansion in North China, 1932- 1937 > Japan’s invasion of China, 1937 > Japan’s occupation of Indo-China, 1940  USA embargoes on steel, iron & oil  Breakdown of USA-Japan talks in 1941

We do not agree that the Asia Pacific War was inevitable due to Japan’s refusal to withdraw from China & Indo-China. The actual war had already started when Japan invaded China. The war between Japan and China, Indo-China, only highlights Japan’s demand for more land & resources. Asia Pacific War was inevitable due to Japan’s foreign policy aims between 1931 & 1941. a.Asian and Pacific Power b.Occupation of Manchuria and China c.Use of aggression to gain raw materials & meet rising population These foreign policy aims clashed with USA’ s power in the Asia Pacific, Japan therefore bombed Pearl Harbor. This factor led to the outbreak of Asia Pacific War. Therefore, whether or not Japan withdrew from China & Indo-China, the war would still take place.
