3 Feldman’s Model of Art Criticism From the work of Edmund Burke Feldman, During the late 1960’s and early 70’s 1. Description- List the visual qualities of the work that are obvious and immediate. “What do you see in the artwork”? Include content and subject matter in representational works- Include abstract elements in nonrepresentational pieces. 2. Analysis- Focus on the formal aspects of elements of art, principles of design. “How does the artist create a center of interest? How does the use of color impact the painting?” 3. Interpretation- Propose ideas for possible meaning based on evidence. “What was the artist trying to communicate”? 4. Judgment- Discuss the overall strengths/success/merit of the work. How and why has this work achieved cultural value?

6 2.ANALYSIS a.This painting was painted in a time when artists were trying to find the identity of art. b. It emphasizes shape and color. c. Balanced, but not symmetrical geometric and horizontal d. Unified by the colors centering on the body which is the brightest color e. The colors are bright, showing the pain the people were feeling. f. The picture is flat and only in the foreground g. The composition is flat and static, except for the body which shows movement. h. The painting shows bright colors and odd shapes. i. The piece creates an angry and sad feeling with its colors and shapes.

7 3. Interpretation a.This work shows the dead Christ being lowered from the cross and supported by his friends and mother in the lowest point of Christianity b. This work is about the lowest point in the Christian story, when the dead Christ is lowered from the cross. c. The people supporting both Mary and the Christ, along with the odd shape of this work highlight the cross and the story behind it.
