2 December 7, 2011 - Winter Poetry TPCASTT - Snow Storm Ho mework S tudy RIU flashcards for Thursday's quiz! Remember, media center checkout on Thursday. LA formative on Friday! Les son Essential Question How can the TPCASTT poetry analysis strategy help me better comprehend poetry? Warm Up Complete numbers 1-10 on the "Take It Further" section on pg.25 in RIU book. Write out the sentence starter and be sure your answer contains context clues that let me know you understand the word's meaning.

3 Let's review...What does TPCASTT stand for???

4 T - Title - make a prediction. Ask yourself...What about that topic or subject could this poem be about? P - Paraphrase - put the poem's LITERAL meaning into your own words. You can chunk it up, but make sure you cover everything! C - Connotation - mark rhyme scheme, identify figurative language and other sound devices, pull text to support, discuss the overall meaning on the overall poem's message or idea A - Attitude (author's tone) - How does the author feel about the subject? What are words or phrases that prove this? S - Shift - Where do changes occur in the poem? What kind of changes are they? What is their impact on the text? T - Title revisited - Is this title accurate? What would be a good alternate title based either on the main idea or the theme of the poem? T - Theme - what BROAD, not selection specific, lesson can the reader take away from this? What does the speaker / author want the audience to learn from this poem?

5 Let's try to TPCASTT a poem together... The following poem is from Snow Storm

6 from Snow Storm - John Clare Wha t a night! The wind howls, hisses, and but stops A To howl more loud, while the snow volley keeps B Incessant batter at the window-pane, C Making our comforts feel as sweet again; C And in the morning, when the tempest drops, A At every cottage door mountainous heaps B Of snow lie drifted, that all entrance stops A Until the broom and the shovel gain C The path, and leave a wall on either side. D

7 T - I predict Snow Storm will be about somebody being stuck in a snowstorm, a kid who can't go outside and play because of a snowstorm, the sounds of a snowstorm. P - The speaker (a man probably) is surprised by the what a strong snowstorm there was. The wind is howling loudly, then stops only to get even louder. It just keeps snowing and snowing, and is grateful to be inside where it's comfortable and warm. In the morning, when the storm is over snow is piled up in front of the houses. No one can get in or out until a path is shoveled into the snow. C - no regular rhyme, rhythm or repetition - probably because a blizzard is really that regular. Onomatopoeia - hiss, howl Alliteration - none No simile, no metaphor. Personification - The wind howls and hisses Hyperbole - mountainous heaps A - During the snowstorm, the speaker happy to be inside but still enjoys watching the storm. In the morning, however, he realizes all the work that will need to be done. S - shift in time - it goes from talking about the snowstorm of the night to waking up in the morning and seeing the result. T - Not For Long, Relaxing Night, Busy Day T - Happiness comes with a price.

8 In your groups, add 3 new lines to the poem... Pick up at the end of the poem, and add 3 new lines, all must rhyme (rhyming triplets) Your rhyme cannot be with SNOW.... - 1 line containing 3+ alliteration (no onomatopoeias or repetition) - 1 line containing a simile - 1 line containing a metaphor You will turn this in as a group - 1 paper with everyone's name on it in the upper right hand corner.
