Using Microsoft Excel! To find r and make a scatter plot!

In Excel, put in your data in columns A and B. Make sure when you do this, you put the independent data (X axis) first. In this case it’s the hours studied. You don’t have to put the labels at the top, but I did it for my own personal reference.

Click in an empty box, and type CORREL (short for linear correlation), and click the CORREL function, once offered to you.

Then, in the parenthesis that shows up next to CORREL, type in the range of boxes that your first column of data is in. In this case I typed A1:A11 Because I used boxes A1 to A11 (Don’t worry, the program knows to ignore letters)

Then, type a comma, and then the range of data from your second column, in this case B1:B11

Press Enter. The number that pops up is r! The answer this time is.8064…

Now for the scatter plot: Start by selecting all of your data. Click on the upper left number, and drag to highlight all of the numbers.

GO to Insert, at the top, and select Chart….

Now, this step might look different in your version of Excel, but nonetheless, in this step, you choose X Y Scatter from the different chart types.

From the different types of X Y Scatter plots available, choose the one that only shows the dots

Here’s your scatter plot!
