2 Nuclear Medicine One example of nuclear medicine that we all might know of or seen somewhere is radiation therapy which is used for cancer. Another one is doctors ordering pet scans. “Nuclear medicine uses radioactive substances to image the body and treat disease. 3 History of Nuclear Medicine Nuclear medicine is a combination of many different things such as sciences and more. Those things include physics, chemistry, engineering, and medicine. They can’t put a pinned down date on the discovery of it. But the discovery of artificial radioactivity in 1934 and the production of radionuclide's in 1946, they pinned it between those two discoveries in stead. “Many historians consider the discovery of artificially produced radioisotopes by Frédéric Joliot-Curie and Irène Joliot-Curie in 1934 as the most significant milestone in Nuclear Medicine.”(news-medical.net) One of the first uses of nuclear medicine was used for thyroid problems.

4 How it works Nuclear medicine is used to look inside the human body with nuclear medicine imaging. Examples of that are Positron emission tomography (PET), Single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), Cardiovascular imaging and Bone scanning. They all use radioactive elements to create an image. They use nuclear medicine imaging to look for aneurysms (weak spots in blood vessel walls), irregular or inadequate blood flow to various tissues, blood cell disorders and inadequate functioning of organs, examples of that are thyroid and pulmonary function deficiencies.

5 Benefits of Nuclear Medicine Nuclear Medicine uses safe levels of radiation. The safe levels of radiation comes from radioactive tracers. Radioactive tracers are used to provide information about the function of specific organs. It can be used to heal a overactive thyroid. Nuclear medicine helps doctors to try and find a quick and accurate diagnose for conditions and diseases of most sorts. Which helps them try to find a way to help as early as possible for it to be more effective. The test have minimum amount of radiation and are safe. They can eliminate overactive thyroid, thyroid cancer and certain types of arthritis. Nuclear medicine is saving peoples lives a step at a time.
