Porfirio Diaz 1877-1910 He ruled as a Dictator. He brought order to Mexico after years of war…but… He denied freedom of the press He jailed his opponents. He used the army to maintain peace at ANY price.

Porfirio Diaz He modernized Mexico by using foreign investors, i.e. America Railroads expanded Factory goods/Cotton production doubled. Although Mexico was modernized, most Mexicans did not benefit as the wealth became concentrated in the hands of foreign investors and small Mexican Elite.

Francisco Madero During the 1910 election, Diaz jailed his opponent and claimed that he had earned one million votes compared to Madero’s 200. Madero fled to Texas and came back to find bands of rebels ready to fight for the cause

Mexican Revolution The revolution occurred as a series of uprisings in different parts of Mexico Emiliano Zapata- (In the south) He took native Americans (Zapatistas) and wanted the land returned to the native people. NORTH- Fancisco Pancho Villa- led a large scale revolt against Diaz. Diaz lost and fled to France.

Shaky Leadership Francisco Madero was elected president of Mexico. He tried to bring Democracy, but failed and was executed. His loyal friend, Victoriano Huerta, proclaimed himself President. Armies immediately came to fight.

USA Woodrow Wilson viewed Huerta as a assassin. He sold arms to Huerta’s enemies and practiced “watchful waiting.” He moved against Huerta openly after the Tampico Incident- Members of the USS Dolphin were arrested. They were released and Mexico apologized, but it was too late. Congress approved War.

Occupying Veracruz Battle of Veracruz- After learning that a German ship was going to Veracruz (that was loaded with weapons), the U.S. went to the port city. 17 Americans and 300 Mexicans died.

The Fight is not over… Wilson supported Carranza and Pancho Villa retaliated. In Columbus NM, Villa burned the town and killed 17 Americans. (War of 1812)‏ John Pershing led 10,000 troops after Villa. The search was called off after they couldn’t find Villa and WWI heated up.
