Idiom --- a commonly used expression whose meaning does not relate to the literal meaning of its words. (use other side if you need more room)

There are at least 4 types of Idioms 5

Frozen Idioms: cannot be change around and keep the same meaning. Easier to learn. A picture paints a thousand words = a thousand words were painted by the picture Meaning: A picture tells a story just as well as a large amount of descriptive text. 6

Flexible Idioms: can keep their meaning even if changed into another form. 7 Pull wool over other people's eyes = the wool was pulled over his eyes Meaning: To deceive someone into thinking well of them.

Transparent idioms: close relationship between literal and figurative meanings. 12 as light as feather Meaning: Very light, not heavy in weight

Opaque idioms: obscure relationship between literal and figurative meanings. 13 can’t cut the mustard— Meaning: To succeed; to come up to expectations; adequate enough to compete or participate. Military source: pass muster

Translating Idioms Idioms from other languages or cultures —may have different meaning and connotation. 16 French avoir les dents longues to have long teeth = to be ambitious English Long in the tooth= an old person

SLANG vs IDIOM Slang- informal, often playful language Hang out- “We should hang out sometime.” (spend time together informally) Cool- “I’d be cool with that.” (I am fine/ good with that) Chill/ chill out- We’re not gonna do much, probably just chill. (We will sit around and relax.) 18
