Galatians The Gospel  No Other Gospel Part 12

“We are justified today by an obedience of faith even as was Abraham in the historical long ago. The sole ground of that justification is the gracious gift of the cross of Christ. Galatians teaches that legalism is a basic error inasmuch as it is a rejection of the cross as the only ground of our redemption and a rejection of faith as the only possible means by which humanity can receive the promised blessing of justification and the gift of the Holy Spirit.” - Edward C. Wharton, Freed for Freedom

“The same God that gave the promise gave the law. His great purpose for the law was to serve the promise to its fulfillment for our sakes. The law accomplished this by enlightening men to the fact that we are all inveterate sinners and that we are totally incapable of making ourselves right with God apart from the cross of Christ. In this way we see the law was not contrary to the promise, but as a servant it led men to realize their need for Christ.” - Edward C. Wharton, Freed for Freedom

The Holy Bible, English Standard Version by Crossway Bibles

Gal 3:1 (ESV) O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified.

Gal 3:2 (ESV) Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith?

Gal 3:3 (ESV) Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?

Gal 3:4 (ESV) Did you suffer so many things in vain—if indeed it was in vain?

Gal 3:5-7 (ESV) Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith— 6 just as Abraham “believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”? 7 Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham. Ref: Gen 15:1-6

Gal 3:8-9 (ESV) And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you shall all the nations be blessed.” 9 So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith. Ref: Gen 12:1-3

Gal 3:10 (ESV) For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.” Ref: Deut 27:26

Gal 3:11 (ESV) Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for “The righteous shall live by faith.” Ref: Habakkuk 2:1-4

Gal 3:12 (ESV) But the law is not of faith, rather “The one who does them shall live by them.” Ref: Lev 18:1-5

Gal 3:13-14 (ESV) Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”— 14 so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith. Ref: Deut 21:22-23 Ref: Heb 2:14-16

Gal 3:15 (ESV) To give a human example, brothers: even with a man-made covenant, no one annuls it or adds to it once it has been ratified. Ref: Gen 12:1-3

Gal 3:16 (ESV) Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring. It does not say, “And to offsprings,” referring to many, but referring to one, “And to your offspring,” who is Christ. Ref: Gen 15:1-6

Gal 3:17-18 (ESV) This is what I mean: the law, which came 430 years afterward, does not annul a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to make the promise void. 18 For if the inheritance comes by the law, it no longer comes by promise; but God gave it to Abraham by a promise.

Gal 3:19-20 (ESV) Why then the law? It was added because of transgressions, until the offspring should come to whom the promise had been made, and it was put in place through angels by an intermediary. 20 Now an intermediary implies more than one, but God is one.

Gal 3:21 (ESV) Is the law then contrary to the promises of God? Certainly not! For if a law had been given that could give life, then righteousness would indeed be by the law.

Gal 3:22 (ESV) But the Scripture imprisoned everything under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.

Gal 3:23-24 (ESV) Now before faith came, we were held captive under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed. 24 So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith.

Gal 3:25-27(ESV) But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian, 26 for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

Gal 3:28-29(ESV) There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise.

Gen 15:1-6 (ESV) After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.” 2 But Abram said, “O Lord God, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” 3 And Abram said, “Behold, you have given me no offspring, and a member of my household will be my heir.” 4 And behold, the word of the Lord came to him: “This man shall not be your heir; your very own son shall be your heir.” 5 And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” 6 And he believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness. Ref: Gal 3:6-7

Gen 12:1-3 (ESV) Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you. 2 And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” Ref: Gal 3:8

Deut 27:26 (ESV) “‘Cursed be anyone who does not confirm the words of this law by doing them.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’ Ref: Gal 3:10

Habakkuk 2:1-4 (ESV) And the Lord answered me: “Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so he may run who reads it. 3 For still the vision awaits its appointed time; it hastens to the end—it will not lie. If it seems slow, wait for it; it will surely come; it will not delay. 4 “Behold, his soul is puffed up; it is not upright within him, but the righteous shall live by his faith. Ref: Gal 3:11

Lev 18:1-5 (ESV) And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, I am the Lord your God. 3 You shall not do as they do in the land of Egypt, where you lived, and you shall not do as they do in the land of Canaan, to which I am bringing you. You shall not walk in their statutes. 4 You shall follow my rules and keep my statutes and walk in them. I am the Lord your God. 5 You shall therefore keep my statutes and my rules; if a person does them, he shall live by them: I am the Lord. Ref: Gal 3:12

Deut 21:22-23 (ESV) “And if a man has committed a crime punishable by death and he is put to death, and you hang him on a tree, 23 his body shall not remain all night on the tree, but you shall bury him the same day, for a hanged man is cursed by God. You shall not defile your land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance. Ref: Gal 3:13-14

Heb 2:14-16 (ESV) Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. 16 For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham.

1 Cor 15:56-57 (ESV) The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Ref: Gal 3:13-14
