1 BellworkBellwork: Day 1 What do you think of the law passed by Arizona requiring presidential candidates to show their birth certificate? Is it a good idea or a bad idea? Who is right here: Anderson Cooper of the Representative from Arizona?

2 You will now become newly elected or reelected members of the Senate and will experience the process of trying to pass a series of bills. Begin by learning your role and helping organize the new session of Congress. 2

3 Step 1Set up the Senate. Experiential Exercise Organizing the House Follow the procedures on the next several slides to organize the new Senate. 3 Arrange the classroom like the Senate chamber by moving desks so they resemble the map below.

4 Organize yourselves by political party as indicated on the map. Party members who want to hold one of the party leadership positions should raise their hands (a minimum of three people per party). Party leaders should have strong leadership skills, be able to speak in front of others, and be good at persuading others. Experiential Exercise 4 Step 2Select party leaders.

5 Each party votes for its leaders. For the majority party - For the minority party - Record the names of party leaders on the board. Experiential Exercise 5 Step 2Select party leaders. 6 Senate Majority Leader: Swear in all members of the House by administering the following oath: Majority Leader: “Do you solemnly swear or affirm that you will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that you will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that you take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that you will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which you are about to enter, so help you God?” Senate members: “I do.” (Enthusiastic applause from all.) Experiential Exercise 6 Step 5Swear in the new Congress.
