2 Parent Function General Formula We can write all parent functions in the following form:

3 Horizontal Shifts A horizontal shift occurs when the x values of a parent function are changed. For a right shift to occur, we will have (x- (+h)) = (x-h) Ex: f(x) = (x - 3) 2 For a left shift to occur, we will have (x – (-h)) = (x+h) Ex: f(x) = (x + 3) 2

4 Vertical Shift A vertical shift occurs when you change the y values of the parent function For an upward shift to occur, we add numbers to the y values Ex: f(x) = x 2 + 3 For a downward shift to occur, we subtract numbers from the y values Ex: f(x) = x 2 - 3
