By Edward Kdonian aka (Dietrich)

In the course of this presentation you will learn: When the first Oktoberfest took place, and how it started The ways in which the holiday has grown over time The varied traditions that are associated with Oktoberfest What constitutes a true “Oktoberfest” beer Some traditional foods associated with the festival Where else in the world the holiday is celebrated A random variety of fun facts

It all began with a wedding On October 12, 1810 Crown Prince Ludwig married Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. It was such a momentous occasion that a full five days after the wedding a great feast was held at the foot of the Sendlinger Tor

From wedding reception to beer fest Originally the party consisted mainly of a feast, some speeches, and a horse race. Nevertheless, it quickly began to grow and within a decade of its inception both agricultural fairs and beer halls could be counted among the festival’s attractions

So it’s my first Oktoberfest, what do I do? When it comes to Oktoberfest Germans, Bavarians in particular, invest heavily in tradition. However, this is more for the sake of fun and good humor rather than rigidity. Traditional peasant costumes like lederhosen inspire a laugh with me vibe. The tapping of the first keg is a near sacred event and is the official kick off of the festival

Märzen From "March" in German. Originally a beer brewed in March and laid down in caves before the summer weather rendered brewing impossible. In Germany, this tradition has come to be associated with one specific style. Märzenbier has a malty aroma, and is a medium-strong version of the amber-red Vienna style. It is seasonal to the Oktoberfest, where it is offered as a traditional speciality alongside paler beers of a similar strength.

I bet you’re hungry after all that beer and parading POTATO AND BEER SOUP BRATWURST STEWED WITH SAUERKRAUT CARAMELIZED ONION PRETZEL ROLLS WITH CARAWAY SALT

In Germany you only beers brewed in Munich are considered official and you will be hard pressed to find any other variety during the festivities Since 1950, the festival has only started after the official gun salute and the mayor shouting O’ zapft is!
