1 BAPTISM

2 BAPTISM The 27th study in the series.
Studies written by William Carey. Presentation by Michael Salzman. All texts are from the New King James version. All rights reserved.

3 Is baptism a requirement? Mark 16:16
1-B BAPTISM Is baptism a requirement? Mark 16:16 “He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. To be baptized is a part of our Christian duty, Acts 2:37-38.

4 How was Jesus baptized? Mark 1:9-11
2-B BAPTISM How was Jesus baptized? Mark 1:9-11 It came to pass in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized by John in Jordan.

5 Jesus was baptized by immersion.
2-B BAPTISM 10 And immediately, coming up from the water, He saw the heavens parting and the Spirit descending upon Him like a dove. 11 Then came a voice from heaven, “You are My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” Jesus was baptized by immersion.

6 What example are we to follow? 1 Peter 2:21
3-B BAPTISM What example are we to follow? 1 Peter 2:21 For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps:

7 3-B BAPTISM We are to follow Him as our example. If we follow Him in the matter of baptism, we too will be baptized by immersion.

8 How did the apostles baptize? Acts 8:36-39
4-B BAPTISM How did the apostles baptize? Acts 8:36-39 Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, “See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?”

9 4-B BAPTISM 37 Then Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.” 38 So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him.

10 4-B BAPTISM 39 Now when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught Philip away, so that the eunuch saw him no more; and he went on his way rejoicing.

11 4-B BAPTISM This is the only description we have of how the apostles baptized people. Note that in this act of baptism BOTH the minister and the believer went down into the pool, the baptism took place when they were BOTH in the water, then after the baptism they BOTH came up out of the pool of water.

12 4-B BAPTISM This proves that the apostles baptized by immersion. If we are baptized in the right way, we will be baptized just as this man was.

13 What is the symbolism of baptism? Colossians 2:12
5-B BAPTISM What is the symbolism of baptism? Colossians 2:12 buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.

14 5-B BAPTISM We are to be BURIED WITH CHRIST IN BAPTISM. To BURY means to COVER UP. When a few drops of water are sprinkled on a person’s head, or a cup of water poured on his head, he is NOT BURIED with Christ in baptism.

15 5-B BAPTISM The fact that baptism is a BURIAL with Christ proves that immersion is the ONLY RIGHT MODE OF BAPTISM. Baptism is a divinely appointed memorial of the burial and resurrection of Christ, and there is nothing in sprinkling or pouring to symbolize or set forth the BURIAL AND RESSURRECTION of Christ.

16 5-B BAPTISM In single immersion a person is laid back in the water, as He was laid in the tomb, and then raised from the water, as He was raised from the tomb. This is the only mode of baptism that rightly sets forth the burial and resurrection of the believer with his Lord.

17 What is required before baptism? Matthew 28:19-20
6-B BAPTISM What is required before baptism? Matthew 28:19-20 “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit:

18 6-B BAPTISM 20 “teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and, lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Amen.

19 6-B BAPTISM Before a person can have a true baptism, even by immersion, he must be TAUGHT TO OBSERVE ALL THINGS that Jesus has ordained in the Bible for a Christian to follow.

20 7-B BAPTISM When a person truly understands what Jesus commanded, is rebaptism a good suggestion? Acts 19:1-5 And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples

21 7-B BAPTISM 2 he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” So they said to him, “We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.” 3 And he said to them, “Into what then were you baptized?” So they said, “Into John’s baptism.”

22 7-B BAPTISM 4 Then Paul said, “John indeed baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying to the people, that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

23 7-B BAPTISM This scripture indicates that if, when you were immersed the first time, you were taught only a part of Christ’s truth, when the true message come to you and teaches you THE FULL TRUTH OF CHRIST for the Christian, IT IS WELL TO BE REBAPTIZED. According to Matthew 28:19-20, we really must be TAUGHT TO OBSERVE ALL THINGS THAT HE HAS COMMANDED BEFORE WE CAN HAVE A TRUE BAPTISM.

24 Once baptized, how should we walk? Romans 6:3-4
8-B BAPTISM Once baptized, how should we walk? Romans 6:3-4 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into His death?

25 8-B BAPTISM 4 Therefore we are buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in the newness of life.

26 8-B BAPTISM When we are baptized we are to be buried with Christ that we may rise to walk in newness of life. We cannot be truly buried with Christ in baptism unless before that baptism we make a FULL SURRENDER OF ALL TO JESUS, to do His will in all things.

27 8-B BAPTISM No one is ready to be buried with Christ in baptism UNTIL HE DIES WITH CHRIST TO THE SINFUL THINGS OF THE WORLD. He cannot come from baptism to live a NEW LIFE UNLESS HE REALLY BURIES THE OLD LIFE OF SIN WITH HIM IN BAPTISM.

28 8-B BAPTISM He cannot be truly buried with Jesus in baptism UNTIL HE IS DEAD TO ALL SUCH THINGS.

29 What do we put on at baptism? Galatians 3:27
9-B BAPTISM What do we put on at baptism? Galatians 3:27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. When we are truly baptized into Christ, we put on Christ to live henceforth for Christ.

30 How should we act after baptism? 1 John 2:6
10-B BAPTISM How should we act after baptism? 1 John 2:6 He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.

31 10-B BAPTISM After being baptized, we are to walk as Jesus walked; and having risen with Christ, we are to set our affection on heavenly things (Col. 3:1-4) and live from that time on according to the will of God, (1 Peter 4:1-2).

32 What is the ultimate reward doing the will of God? Revelation 22:14
11-B BAPTISM What is the ultimate reward doing the will of God? Revelation 22:14 Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city.

33 11-B BAPTISM If we follow in the way of God’s commandments after we are baptized, someday we will surely pass in through the pearly gates to live forever in the wonderful city of God.

34 Do you understand the importance of baptism?
Do you want to take this important step towards Christ in your life? Do you feel the need for a rebaptism if you have already been baptized? END - B
