No one can know with a certainty of faith, which cannot be subject to error, that he has obtained the grace of God (Canons and Decrees of the Council of Trent, Chapter 9).

If anyone says that a man who is born again and justified is bound of faith to believe that his is assuredly in the number of the predestined, let him be anathema (Canons and Decrees of the Council of Trent, Chapter 15).

1 John 5:12-13 He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life. 13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.

John 6:37-39 All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out. 38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. 39 This is the will of Him who sent Me, that of all that He has given Me I lose nothing, but raise it up on the last day.

John 6:40 For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.

John 10:27-30 My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; 28 and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.

Hebrews 6:13-15 For when God made the promise to Abraham, since He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself, 14 saying, “I will surely bless you and I will surely multiply you.” 15 And so, having patiently waited, he obtained the promise.

Hebrews 6:16 For men swear by one greater than themselves, and with them an oath given as confirmation is an end of every dispute.

Hebrews 6:17-18 In the same way God, desiring even more to show to the heirs of the promise the unchangeableness of His purpose, interposed with an oath, 18 so that by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have taken refuge would have strong encouragement to take hold of the hope set before us.

Hebrews 6:19-20 This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and one which enters within the veil, 20 where Jesus has entered as a forerunner for us, having become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.

Saved and knows it Saved and does not know it Not Saved and knows it Not Saved and does not know it

Once saved, always saved Once a person comes to faith in Jesus Christ, they will be saved no matter whether or not they continue to believe. Reformed Theology Loss of Salvation It is possible for one to experience a faith for a time that is not saving faith. Such a one often falls away after a time. A person might come to Christ and be saved and then, because of sin or unbelief, might lose that salvation and be lost.

Reads the parable of the sower and believes that only the first one is lost while the others merely suffer “loss of rewards.” The sower pictures some who initially experience a measure of spiritual growth, but who ultimately fall away and are not saved. The parable of the sower tells of some who were initially saved but who lost their salvation because they did not endure. Once saved, always saved Reformed Theology Loss of Salvation

Once saved, always saved; no matter what. The perseverance of God’s elect is guaranteed by the work of the Holy Spirit. Salvation is a matter of enduring to the end. Once saved, always saved Reformed Theology Loss of Salvation

1 st John 2:18-19 Children, it is the last hour; and just as you heard that antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have appeared; from this we know that it is the last hour. 19 They went out from us, but they were not really of us; for if they had been of us, they would have remained with us; but they went out, so that it would be shown that they all are not of us.

2 nd Peter 1:5-7 Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge, 6 and in your knowledge, self-control, and in your self- control, perseverance, and in your perseverance, godliness, 7 and in your godliness, brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love.

2 nd Peter 1:8-9 For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor unfruitful in the true knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 For he who lacks these qualities is blind or short-sighted, having forgotten his purification from his former sins.

2 nd Peter 1:10-11 Therefore, brethren, be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never stumble; 11 for in this way the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be abundantly supplied to you.

Ephesians 2:8-10 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.

Romans 8:35-36 Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 Just as it is written, “ For your sake we are being put to death all day long; we were considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”

Romans 8:37-39 But in all these things we over- whelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Share the following with your group: What did you want to be when you grew up?What did you want to be when you grew up? Did it take place?Did it take place?

2 Thessalonians 2:13-14 But we should always give thanks to God for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God has chosen you from the beginning for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and faith in the truth. 14 It was for this He called you through our gospel, that you may gain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Genesis 2:3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.

Exodus 29:43-44 “I will meet there with the sons of Israel, and it shall be consecrated by My glory. 44 I will consecrate the tent of meeting and the altar; I will also consecrate Aaron and his sons to minister as priests to Me.”

1 Corinthians 1:1-2 Paul, called as an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother, 2 To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, saints by calling, with all who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours

2 Corinthians 4:16-18 Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day. 17 For momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison, 18 while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.

Hebrews 10:14 For by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified. Present tense

Sanctification is the work of God’s free grace, whereby we are renewed in the whole man after the image of God, and are enabled more and more to die unto sin, and live unto righteousness. (WCF Shorter Catechism 35).

Both come from the grace of God.Both come from the grace of God. Both are a part of the work of salvation that God provides. Both are a part of the work of salvation that God provides. Both are to be found in all the converted. There is no such thing as a person who has been justified who has not also been sanctified. Both are to be found in all the converted. There is no such thing as a person who has been justified who has not also been sanctified. Both begin at the same time. Both begin at the same time. Both are necessary to salvation. Both are necessary to salvation.

To be declared righteous To be set apart and thereby made holy or consecrated. Justification is the reckoning and counting of a man to be righteous on the basis of the imputed righteousness of Christ. Sanctification is the making of a man to be inwardly righteous.

The righteousness of justification is an imputed righteousness received by faith and is not our own. The righteousness of sanctification is an imparted righteousness brought about in us by the Holy Spirit. Justification is an absolute. Sanctification in the progressive sense is relative and in part.

Speaks of a work done for you. Speaks of a work done in you. You are declared righteous on the basis of the merits of Jesus Christ. You are set apart for God’s special use by the work of the Holy Spirit.

…a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the Law; since by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified (Galatians 2:16). “…that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who have been sanctified by faith in Me.” (Acts 26:18)

Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him (Romans 5:9). Therefore Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people through His own blood, suffered outside the gate. (Hebrews 13:12).

Delivers us from the guilt of sin JustificationRegenerationSanctification Delivers us from the power of sin Delivers us from the presence of sin It is done for us It is done in us It is done for us and in us It is a legal declaration It is a creative act It is a growing process It brings about a changed standing It brings about a change in your nature It brings about a change in your life

JustificationRegenerationSanctification Happens at the point of initial salvation Begins with salvation and progresses To be declared righteous To be born again To be set apart to God

Philippians 1:6 For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus. My children, with whom I am again in labor until Christ is formed in you (Galatians 4:19).

Ephesians 4:14-15 As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming; 15 but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ

1 John 3:2-3 Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is. 3 And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.
