2 Standards Revision Process

3 79-760.01. Academic content standards State Board of Education Duties: Adopt measurable academic content standards for at least the grade levels required for statewide assessment pursuant to section 79-760.03. The standards shall cover the subject areas of reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies. The standards adopted shall be sufficiently clear and measurable to be used for testing student performance with respect to mastery of the content described in the state standards.

Academic content standards State Board of Education Duties: (continued) The State Board of Education shall develop a plan to review and update standards for each subject area every five years. The state board shall review and update the standards in reading by July 1, 2009, the standards in mathematics by July 1, 2010, and the standards in all other subject areas by July 1, 2013. The state board plan shall include a review of commonly accepted standards adopted by school districts.

7 Standards Criteria The standards will:  focus on students before content.  be broad, deep and few, representing the most essential and enduring concepts.  reflect on-going research and best practice.  reflect knowledge and skills relevant to citizens of the 21 st century.  include STATEWIDE Performance Level Descriptors (PLD’s).

9 K-12 Comprehensive Content Standards Identify broad K-12 learning standards for students related to reading, writing, speaking, and listening Grade Level Standards Statements that identify what students know and be able to do by the end of each identified grade Curricular Indicators Examples that further define what a student should learn at each specified grade level

10 K-12 Comprehensive Content Standards Grade Level Standards Curricular Indicators Local Curriculum Lesson Plans Classroom Instructional Strategies Specific Strategies for Individual Students Determined by Local School Districts/ Classroom Teachers Determined by State Board Guidance for Districts, Schools, and Teachers Determined by State Board Required for all Standards Curriculum Instruction
