WESTERN HILLS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL LESSON PLAN  Lesson Title: Digging up Adventure  6 th Grade Science  30-40 minutes By Erica Bermudez & Jesus Villa

LEARNING OBJECTIVES Our learning objectives are the following; (1) Students will be able to distinguish the different types of fossils (i.e. trace, impression, mold and cast) (2) Students will be able to describe the fossilization process (3) Students will be able to identify evidence of ancient life (4) Students will be able to create a concept map of the different types of fossils.

TEKS ALIGNMENT (3) Scientific investigation and reasoning. The student uses critical thinking, scientific reasoning, and problem solving to make informed decisions and knows the contributions of relevant scientists. The student is expected to: (A) in all fields of science, analyze, evaluate, and critique scientific explanations by using empirical evidence, logical reasoning, and experimental and observational testing, including examining all sides of scientific evidence of those scientific explanations, so as to encourage critical thinking by the student;

MATERIALS  Box of sand/ dirt  Sea Shells  Dinosaur bones  Excavation kit containing brushes, plastic spoons, and spray bottle  Paper Towels

SAFETY CONSIDERATION  Do not place any materials in your mouth  Possibility of young children in direct proximity with older students who may be aggressive. If two teachers are present they can split both groups and focus on complex or simple topics differently depending on the age group of students.  The possible danger of young audience getting sand in eyes or mouth. Make sure to be careful when brushing the sand/dirt from the rocks  Students must make sure to not spray any water on any surface other than the fossil kid

SCIENTIFIC TOPICS  Students will identify the fossilization process  Students will also be able to identify the different types of fossils (for example; mold, cast, traces, impression, etc.)
