2 What is Proficiency-based Education? A system of instruction, assessment, grading, and academic reporting based on students demonstrating that they have learned the knowledge and skills they are expected to learn as they progress through their education. Great Maine Schools Partnership, 2014

4 Proficiency-Based Education: Beliefs & Practices in RSU #38 1.All learning expectations are clearly and consistently communicated to students and families. 2.Standards and outcomes for each subject area (math, reading, social studies…) are organized in learning progressions (PreK-12). 2.Teachers, students and parents can see their progress and get support when needed. No surprises at the end!

5 Proficiency-Based Education: Beliefs & Practices in RSU #38 4. Achievement is evaluated against common standards and expectations that are consistently applied to all students 5. Students are given multiple opportunities to improve their work to meet a standard. 6. Students can demonstrate achievement of standards in different ways. 7. The purpose of grades and proficiency reports is to improve the learning process

6 8. Proficiency-Based Education is a collaborative improvement process to ADD VALUE to a Maranacook education How can we support each other & our students through this transition?

7 Legal Requirements Must support learning of Maine Standards – Maine Public Schools must be structured to permit student achievement of content areas of Maine Learning Results (2002 Chapter 127) – Including Guiding Principles (Chap 132) Must adopt a plan for transitioning to a proficiency- based diploma (2012 sec 4502 Chapter 127) Current timeline for this is CLASS of 2020
