2 Take your Pick! Do our classroom activities get students’ attention? Are they relevant to students’ needs and interests? Are they culturally rich & authentic? Well…… Spark a passion for discovery & healthy engagement in your students Use internet searching, game-based learning, conversation circles, Web-Quests, PACE modeling as learning tools Give students ownership of what they learn Promote active & creative learning through interaction & collaboration Create culturally rich & real learning activities Engage students in exploration & problem solving – While you address standards & enhance your ‘teaching tool kit’ Which activity should I present my students with tomorrow?

4 Create Activities that : Real – engage students to look at and reflect on topics that concern people in the real world and involve students in a constructive process that is student-driven to some significant degree, not teacher-led, scripted, or packaged Rich – link student learning to the world around us and introduce culturally rich practices, perspectives and products that foster cultural awareness Relevant – connect to their ‘world’; is of interest to them, reflect their concerns -- incorporate real-life challenges with a focus on authentic (not simulated) problems or questions

6 Student teachers from the University of Northern Colorado will:  Present Practical Approaches to creating engaging language activities  Focus on the Colorado Content Standards for World Languages Session participants will have access to all activities via a Wiki link created by the presenters. All materials may be copied and shared as needed with other foreign language teachers.
