3. Roots The roots voc as in vocabulary and dict as in dictionary mean “word, voice, to speak.” voc is from Latin & means “to call dict is from Latin & means “to speak, to say” Lets see what you understand, complete the Using Root Clues exercise on page 11 of the VCR book.

4. Avocation (N) A pastime or hobby; a profession practiced with enjoyment. In your notebooks create one question about an avocation you may have a question about. For example, I would ask Tiger Woods “ How old were you when you first knew that golf was what you wanted to do as your avocation?”

5. Vocal (Adj.) 1. Connected with speaking or with the voice. 2. Expressing one’s ideas firmly and often; outspoken Think of a time in your life when you had to be vocal.

6. Vocalist (N) Singer Name three vocalist who you believe have the best voices.

7. Vocation (N) A job; a calling or inclination toward a type of work or service Who can explain the difference in an “avocation” and a “vocation”?

8. Did you know Sometimes your vocation can also be your avocation, the thing you most enjoy doing… You may love playing basketball and have this as your occupation.

9. Addictive (Adj) Habit-forming, hard to break away from, easy to say yes to. Name some things that can be addictive?

10. Contradict (V) To speak against, to say the opposite of. What is a another word you may think of when you see this word?

11. Dictation (N) The act of saying words for someone else to write down. For example- In French class, Ms. Benoit gave us dictations each week to improve our ability to understand and write the words we heard.
