1+2 Approach to Language Learning Scottish Government Manifesto 2011 Language learning to become the norm in Scottish Primary Schools Based on European Union Model Delivered by class teacher as part of the normal curriculum

Dr Alasdair Allan, Minister for Learning, Science and Scotland’s Languages Dr Alasdair Allan, Minister for Learning, Science and Scotland’s Languages Dr Alasdair Allan, Minister for Learning, Science and Scotland’s Languages Dr Alasdair Allan, Minister for Learning, Science and Scotland’s Languages

Background to the 1+2 Approach: What is 1+2 ? Mother tongue = L1 All children in Scotland access a modern language from P1 = L2 All children have exposure to another modern language no later than P5 = L3 Phased approach 2014 - 2020

When will my child start learning another language? From October 2015 all P1 children in East Lothian will learn French. P6 and P7 children will continue to learn a second language as before. By August 2019 all primary classes in East Lothian will be learning French. From session 2019-2020 all P5 children will learn a third language in addition.

How will 1 + 2 be implemented in ELC? Session 2015-16 - all P1 classes have weekly contact with a native French speaker (assistants) followed up by class teacher. Assistants develop resources for schools and offer staff French conversation. School/community project with assistants. Primary schools in every cluster work together to integrate language into the curriculum. Every East Lothian primary school has the opportunity to link with a primary school in Normandy.

How will ELC support schools? Employ Language assistants (6 French and 2 Mandarin in 2015) Buy resources for every school. Give each primary school additional initial funding. Offer a range of staff language training. Employ 2 development officers to support staff development and development of resources and curriculum.

Why should my child learn other languages? More than 75% of the world’s population does not speak English. Language learning deepens our awareness of other cultures. Equips our children with skills for the workplace. Strengthens knowledge and improves literacy in the mother tongue.

Languages in East Lothian L2 = French, agreed in clusters, determined by teachers’ current language skills. L3 - discussion to be taken forward in session 16-17, dependant on expertise available in schools and clusters. Mandarin trialled in a few primaries. Languages available in secondaries: French, Spanish,German.

Transition to S1 In most cases your child will continue studying L2 through BGE to the end of S3. Cluster approach ensures that all children transition to S1 with the same experience and that there is ongoing liaison with secondary colleagues. P.7 profile will inform S1 language learning. In time it is hoped L3 may be offered throughout BGE in addition to or instead of L2.

When mother tongue is not English, what does 1+2 mean? Mother tongue = L1 English = L2 Other modern language = L3 Mother tongue to be recognised and valued.

ASN Learners and 1+2 Entitlement to learn another language at a level appropriate to needs. Support to be given to overcome barriers to learning. You may wish to discuss this on an individual basis with your school.

Will my child confuse languages? Learning another language will encourage literacy skill development in English. Languages are interconnected: learning another language supports understanding of how languages work.

How will language learning fit into the curriculum? Normal part of the curriculum Embedded from P1 Use of language learning in daily classroom routines Included in other areas of the curriculum eg. Maths, P.E or Topic

How can I support my child? Positive attitude to languages and other cultures. Have fun! Ask your child to teach you what they have learned. Label household items, look at interesting websites, read cartoons in other languages etc.
