3 Acadia Institute for Teaching and Technology Formative vs Summative Peer Review Formative vs Summative ( ½ and ½ )? –Will the peer be providing feedback as something is in the process of being created (formative) or when the final product is complete (summative)? The challenge is to increase the amount of formative feedback that is provided to students to balance the it with the large amount of summative feedback students receive. Material Form Sum

4 Acadia Institute for Teaching and Technology Formative vs. Summative Feedback Summative – evaluation of student or instructor regarding their final level of knowledge and/or skill. Typically done using: major tests, exams, term projects and course evaluations. Formative - assessment of a person’s current knowledge and/or skill level with the goal of improving it. Typically done using; quizzes, short papers and surveys. Material Form Sum

5 Acadia Institute for Teaching and Technology Repeated vs Once Peer Review Repeated vs Once – –a series of reviews allows for a more natural growth of understanding, a one time peer review is easier to administer.

6 Acadia Institute for Teaching and Technology Product vs Process Peer Review Product vs Process –What is being evaluated? The product being created or the process that takes place to create that product. Peer review is possible for both of these things, but provides more long term value when process is covered. Typically we do process poorly.

7 Acadia Institute for Teaching and Technology Formal vs Informal Peer Review Formal vs Informal –Formal peer review is visible and potentially gradable by the teacher. Informal happens between students with little or no record of what has taken place. Both are valuable. (Editing group story)

8 Acadia Institute for Teaching and Technology Criteria Grid vs Open Ended Peer Review Criteria Grid vs Open Ended –Criteria converts easily to a mark, but open ended can provide more clarity for future work. Criteria  how well on a scale of 1 – 5 did the paper engage your interest. 1 being not at all and 5 being totally Open Ended  How engaging was this paper and what made it that way?

9 Acadia Institute for Teaching and Technology Anonymous vs Known Peer Review Anonymous vs Known –Some instructors are wary of students knowing what other students graded them (technology helps here). Known is the best solution if this factor is not an issue.

10 Acadia Institute for Teaching and Technology Technology vs Paper Peer Review Technology vs Paper –Face to face exchanges using paper is the best solution for smaller classes. Larger classes may need a technology solution.
