1 Momentum Chapter 2.3

2 Momentum, Mass, and Velocity
Momentum (p): the product of the mass and velocity of an object The more momentum an object has the harder it is to stop or change its direction

3 Calculating Momentum Momentum: Mass of an object multiplied by its velocity P=M X V Unit: kg*m/s

4 Law Conservation of Momentum
States that when any time objects collide, the total amount of momentum stays the same When a moving object hits another object, some or all of the momentum of the first is transferred

5 Practice Problems Find the momentum of the different balls
m= .045 kg m=.168 kg m= .575 kg V= 16 m/s upward v=3 m/s forward v= 9.2 m/s east At a rodeo, a bucking bronco throws an 81 kg rider into the air at a velocity of 10 m/s upward. What is the riders momentum? What is the velocity of a 55 kg skater who has a momentum of 440 kg×m/s forward?
