The analysis of a billiard ball system

Drawing First draw the system and the balls. Then remove gravity. Then add air resistance to the balls to simulate rolling resistance. Finally give the cue ball an initial velocity.

This is the force on the corner ball with a tight rack of balls. As you can see the velocity on the corner ball is high.

In a loose rack, the front ball is not touching the rest of the balls. As you can see the velocity on the last ball is much lower.

Simulation Take the working model file and make sure the balls in the rack are all touching and run the simulation.

Simulation Now take the working model file and make a loose rack, by moving the leading ball out and run the simulation.

Simulation As you can see the tight rack gives a much better force distribution to all the balls. Loose Rack Tight Rack

Conclusion So in the game of billiards it is very important to have a nice tight rack of balls. Thank you…
