2 2 What is Physical Fitness? Having the energy and ability to do everything you want and need to do in your daily life Physical activity – using your muscles to move your body Helps you develop fitness More physically active you are, more fit you are

3 3 Muscular Strength and Endurance Strength – power to work your muscles against resistance –You can life heavy objects without strain Endurance – ability to keep working your muscles without becoming overly tired –Carrying a book bag is a sign of muscular endurance

4 4 Flexibility Ability to move your muscles and joints through their full range of motion Require bending, reaching, stretching When you are flexible you can do more easily everyday activities

5 5 Coordination & Balance Allows you to hit a tennis ball and ride a bike Control muscles and stay upright

6 6 Body Composition Measure of the proportions of fat, muscle, bones, fluid that make up your weight Chances are more active you are, the greater amount of your body that’s made up of muscle

7 7 Cardiorespiratory Endurance How well your heart and lungs can keep up with your activity Aerobic activities increases your endurance Aerobic activities – activities that work your heart and lungs –Better your body uses oxygen, more active you are without being tired –See chart on page 232

11 11 Managing Stress Physical activity is a healthful way to cope with stress Gives you stamina to feel energetic Improves your mood Easier to concentrate Sleep more soundly Feel good about yourself

12 12 Staying Physically Healthy Physically fit body is often better able to fight disease and illness Reduce your chances of health problems as you get older Strengthen bones with weight bearing activities (walking, soccer, dancing) Get enough calcium

16 16 Can You Be Too Active? There are limits Too much activity may cause injury Make you feel too tired May cause problems with reproductive cycle Increase activity level, do so gradually Get plenty of rest Plenty to eat Talk to your doctor to begin

17 17 Physical Fitness – For you Life Lifelong goal Being active when young gets you off to a healthy start When you enjoy it, you will do it regularly Becomes a habit (6 weeks) Activities you choose may change
