1 VMWare Workstation Installation

2 Starting Vmware Workstation Go to the start menu and start the VMware Workstation program. *Note: The following instructions are written starting at the point after the download and/or installation of VMware Workstation (or MS Virtual PC). If you have any questions regarding the download or installation see your instructor.

3 Creating a new virtual machine. Select “New Virtual Machine” on the Home page.

4 Selecting the Configuration Method For this installation, we will stay with the default of “Typical” configuration. The “Custom” configuration should be done by more advanced users or with the guidance of your instructor. Click Next.

5 Choosing Install Method In the “Guest Operating System Installation” window, select the “I will install the operating system later” radial button.

6 Select the Guest OS VMware will likely detect the OS automatically. If not, choose from the list the most appropriate operation system.

7 Naming the Virtual Machine In this step you need to give your virtual machine a descriptive name and select a location for it. It’s good practice to include the OS version in the name and create a folder with the same name just for that particular virtual machine. Click Next.

8 How big should the VM be? Although the size of your VM can be proportional to the size of the hard drive that it is on, we will make ours 16 GB. Click Next.

9 Creating the VM Check the settings to make sure they are correct and then click Finish.

10 Starting the installation. You now need to start the virtual machine to start the install process. You may do this by one of two methods. 1. Clicking the play (start) button on the Power toolbar or, 2. Clicking the play (start) link in the Commands section.

11 For this install we will be using an ISO image. So you will need to edit the CD-ROM settings. To do this, right click on the CD-ROM icon in the bottom taskbar and select “Settings”. You should see the dialog box similar to the one shown here.

12 Selecting the boot image You will now need to browse for the OS image that you should already have downloaded. It will have an.iso extension. Make sure that the “Use ISO image” radial button is selected. Click OK.

13 Reset the VM Click on the “Reset This Virtual Machine” button. *The machine will automatically boot to the ISO image.

14 Language, Time, Keyboard Keep the defaults. Click Next.

15 Start the Install Click “Install now”

16 Select the OS Version For this installation we are going with Windows Server 2008 Enterprise without Hyper-V (Full Installation)

17 License Terms Check “I accept the license terms”. Click Next

18 Type of Installation We are going to do a Custom (advanced) install for this VM.

19 Where to Install Select Disk 0 (the disk you created for the VM) Click Next

20 Installing Windows… It will take several minutes to complete the installation.

21 Login Enter a password for the Administrator account and login as Administrator.

22 VMware Tools VMware Tools installation should start automatically after you login.

23 Network Settings Click on the “Configure networking” link.

24 Network Settings You should see at least one network connection. Click on the connection and then right click. Select properties.

25 Network Settings Select “Internet Protocol Version 4” and click the “Properties” button

26 Network Settings Unless you have a DHCP server you will need to enter an IP address, subnet mask and DNS server. Your instructor will assist you while in class.

27 Activating Windows Right click on Computer, on the Start Menu, or press the Windows Key + Pause/Break for the System window. Click on the “Activate Windows now” link at the bottom of the window. *Note: Make sure you have a connection to the internet before proceeding with this step.

28 Software Key Enter the key that came with your software. Click Next

29 Activating Windows It will take a few minutes for the process to complete.

30 Updates After logging in and setting up a network connection the first thing to do would be check for updates.

31 Updates Install the Windows Update Software.

32 Updates If you don’t select all updates, it’s a good idea to at least select “Important” updates.

33 Installation Complete Your new Microsoft Windows Server 2008 VM should be ready to go now.
