1 Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar Workshop
Year 1 and Year 2 Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar Workshop January 2016

2 At St. Martin de Porres… We believe that the focussed teaching of spelling, punctuation and grammar will enable each child to properly arrange words in sentences, add the correct punctuation thus helping them to communicate their ideas effectively. We teach the meaning of word groups and punctuation daily in English lessons in order to give the children these fundamental skills to develop and improve their writing. Spelling is incorporated into both our English lessons and Phonics lessons, where children are encouraged to sound out words before writing. We also teach spelling discreetly twice a week in year 1 and year 2 in preparation for the end of KS1 assessments.

20 How are we supporting learning?
We focus on a specific word or punctuation skill each week . e.g. adjectives, verbs, adverbs, full stops, commas for a list, writing descriptive sentences, games, etc. We teach a discrete grammar lesson each week We teach spelling rules twice a week The children have a daily phonics lesson every week which supports with their spellings Homework is linked to SPAG with the focus in year 1 on spellings and the focus in year 2 on grammar and punctuation. We talk about SPAG wherever and whenever the opportunity arises.
