4 History as Defined by Historians The purpose of historical inquiry is not simply to present facts, but to search for an interpretation of the past. Historians attempt to find patterns and establish meaning through the rigorous study of documents and artifacts left by people of other times and other places. Historical Perspective and Context 4

7 What is a Primary Source? A primary source is a document or physical object which was written or created during the time under study. Some types of primary sources include: ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS (excerpts or translations acceptable): Diaries, speeches, manuscripts, letters, interviews, news film footage, autobiographies, official records CREATIVE WORKS : Poetry, drama, novels, music, art RELICS OR ARTIFACTS : Pottery, furniture, clothing, buildings 7

8 What is a Secondary Source? A secondary source interprets and analyzes primary sources. These sources are one or more steps removed from the event. Some types of secondary sources include : PUBLICATIONS : Textbooks, magazine articles, histories, criticisms, commentaries, encyclopedias A journal/magazine article or book which interprets or reviews previous findings 8

9 Our Mission in IB History of the Americas: To interpret history by incorporating the 6 key IB Historical concepts throughout the year: change, perspectives, consequence, significance, causation, and continuity. To interpret and analyze both primary and secondary sources. To construct a historical essay with an effective thesis statement. To successfully complete a Historical Investigation (Research Paper). To generate questions, comments, perspectives and engage in meaningful class discussions. 9

10 About the IB History Year 1 IB Exam HL Topics: Option 3 Aspects of History of the Americas (Year 1) We will study the following topics in depth over the course of the year: 1: Indigenous societies and cultures in the Americas (c750–1500) 2: European explorations and conquests in the Americas (c1492–c1600) Prescribed subject 2: Conquest and its impact -this prescribed subject focuses on Spanish conquest of Mexico and Peru (1519-1551) (IB SL /HL) 6: Independence movements (1763–1830) Haiti, U.S., Mexico, South America 10

11 About IB History Year 2 IB Exam SL Topics: IB World History (Year 2) We will study the following topics in depth over the course of the year: Prescribed subject 2: Case study 1: The final stages of Muslim rule in Spain Context and motives 4. World history topic 4: Societies in transition (1400–1700) This topic focuses on exploring societal change. It centers on the transition from the medieval to the modern world 5. World history topic 5 : Early Modern states (1450–1789) This topic focuses on political change in the Early Modern period. It examines the establishment and expansion of colonial empires, as well as the social, economic and cultural impact of this expansion upon the colonial states. 11

12 About the Internal Assessment: The Historical Investigation Research Paper (8-9 pages) divided into 3 Sections (A,B,C) The Historical Investigation will be scaffolded and students will turn in the research paper in sections throughout the school year. The final draft will be due in June, 2016. SEE SYLLABUS FOR SPECIFICS 12

14 About the External Assessment (May, 2017) Standard Level (SL) EXAM: Paper 1 (1 hour) Source-based paper 30% - based on one of the five prescribed subjects. Our Prescribed subject is: S ubject 2: Conquest and its impact (to be covered Year 1 and Year 2 ) Answer four structured questions. (24 marks). Paper 2 (1 hour 30 minutes) Essay paper 45% -based on the 12 world history topics. Answer two essay questions on two different topics (30 marks). Based on material covered Year 2. Higher Level (HL) EXAM: Paper 1 and Paper 2 ( see above) AND Paper 3 (2 hours 30 minutes) For the selected region (the Americas), answer three essay questions. (45 marks). Material will be covered Year 1. 14

18 Geographic Terminology Country -a nation with its own government occupying a specific territory. Border – a line separating two political or geographic areas. Borders are human constructions that depend on: Physical features ( mountains, rivers, etc.) Human decision making Conflict & War 18

Before there was a United States of America … There were 13 “American Colonies” belonging to the British. 1 st British Colony- JAMESTOWN, Virginia established in 1607.
