1 Homonyms Commonly used (and therefore misused) homonyms.

2 Homonyms Accept: Verb Definition: to receive Example: I will accept the award on Sunday evening. Except: A preposition that suggests exclusion. Example: You can bring everyone except Melissa.

3 Homonyms Affect: Verb Definition: to influence or shape Example: Will the diet affect your mood? Effect: Noun/Verb Definition: to cause a result or an outcome Example: The special effects made the movie seem more realistic.

4 Homonyms Allusion: An indirect reference Example: There were several allusions to that text message in our conversation. Illusion: A false impression Example: I was not under the illusion that I would ace this class.

5 Homonyms Assure: To inform positively or with confidence Example: Matt assured me that there would be gluten free food there. Ensure: To make certain of something Example: They took steps to ensure their child's safety.

6 Homonyms Capital: Reference to money, letters or cities Examples: He raised capital for the company. Make sure you capitalize your A's. Salt Lake City is the capital of Utah. Capitol: A building Example: I love the capitol building in Saint Paul.

7 Homonyms Counsel: Guidance, Advice Example: My teacher provided me with the counsel I needed to succeed in school. Council: A group of people that assembles for deliberation and discussion. Example: The council meets every Monday morning.

8 Homonyms Bow: Weapon that projects arrows. Example: My brother shot a bow and arrow at a target in the yard. Bow: A ribbon used in gift wrapping. Example: I loved the red bow on my gift box.

9 Homonyms Principal: The leader or administrator of a school. Example: The principal called me into his office to give me an award. Principle: Standards, Codes, Truth Example: Her principles prevented her from making that decision.

10 Homonyms To: A preposition suggesting direction Example: I drove my sister to the airport. Too: An adverb meaning “also.” Ex: I want to come, too. Two: a number representing a pair Example: I have two cats.

11 Homonyms Their: suggests possession that pertains to more than one person Example: I enjoyed visiting their home. There: A place Example: Don't take me there. They're: Contraction of “they are” Ex: I like it when they're laughing.

12 Homonyms Pin: Object that is used to fasten two objects together. Example: I used a pin to fasten the diaper. Pen: A writing instrument Example: My pen broke, cracked and then the ink spilled everywhere.

13 Homonyms Bark: The outer covering of a tree Example: I like watching deer eat the bark off of trees. Bark: A dog's method of communication Example: Can you please ask the children not to sing? It makes the dog bark.

14 Homonyms You're Contraction of “you are.” Example: You're a comedian. Your: Signifies possession/ possessive “you.” Example: I won't touch your car.

15 Homonyms Then an adverb that reflects time. Example: We ate too much last night, then we felt sick. Than makes a comparison. Example: I'd rather be too tall than too short.
