4 Exposition The Introduction We meet the characters
We learn about the setting We start to understand what the story is about DBS: We meet the narrator. We learn he hates his wife. We see they are playing scrabble.

5 Crisis/Inciting Incident
Something happens that sets everything into motion The conflict is introduced Before this point, there was no issue This gives us something to look forward to Could be a problem, a realization, or a change DBS: The narrator realizes that his scrabble letters control what happens.

6 Rising Action Things begin to build up
Many different issues or events occur Can be directly related to the inciting incident Think of it like domino’s being knocked over DBS: The narrator tests his theory, considers what to do, plays the word QUAKE.

7 Climax The point of no return. After the Climax, things cannot go completely back to the way things were The major event of conflict is solved or finished DBS: The narrators wife plays the word DEATH

8 Falling Action Everything begins to fall into place
Questions are answered Closure beings DBS: An earthquake begins, the narrator begins to choke on his tile and falls

9 Denouement The Conclusion The story ends Everything is wrapped up
DBS: The narrators wife watches her husband die.
