1 Registered Nursing Kristin Harmon

2 Interviewee Emily Engle Family Friend Mother of three Experience in the field: 20 years Works at Carolina’s Medical Center in Charlotte

3 Things I learned: They do self-scheduling on her unit and the manager makes the final schedule based on unit and staffing needs. She checks her duties more than once to reduce human error What a typical workday consists of: arrive at work, go to safety huddle (where the charge nurse from the shift before goes through the list of patients and tells what patients are unsafe, etc.), do walking report with nurse she is relieving, assess patients, pass meds, assess patients, complete charting (documenting assessments, vital signs, etc.), talk to the doctor if need be, and give report to oncoming nurse

4 Closing Comment “Even though nursing is difficult, nursing school is tough and the profession is not for the faint of heart, I would say keep perspective and persevere. It is worth the incredible challenge, because once that degree is in hand, there are virtually endless possibilities for what one can do in nursing these days.”
