10 Belgian National Railway (known as NMBS/SNCB) is a limited company governed by public law. On behalf of the Belgian State, it carries out its public service obligations, mainly for the domestic transport of passengers and maintenance of the infrastructure. Business Situation The main objective for the consolidation of the IT infrastructure was cost reduction. The problem was that the NMBS/SNCB structure is organized in independent units each with their own domains. Business Benefits Customer Estimated total IT expenditure reduced by 33 percent Estimated total IT expenditure reduced by 33 percent File and print servers were reduced by 25 percent File and print servers were reduced by 25 percent Improved availability with Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) Improved availability with Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) DNS server redundancy increased 20-fold by Active DNS server redundancy increased 20-fold by Active Directory® directory service integrated replication

11 NMBS / SNCB Video

12 Solution With Microsoft® Windows Server™ 2003, NMBS/SNCB now operates under a single domain architecture on a single network. NMBS/SNCB also is working on implementation of the Volume Shadow Copy service, which enables end users to recover “lost” files themselves, instead of having to call the support department. Results Able to do more with less Single directory structure Single directory structure Global view of all users and resources Global view of all users and resources Delegation of authorities across enterprise Delegation of authorities across enterprise Fewer servers to maintain Fewer servers to maintain Increased security Increased security Do not need an onsite administrator at every location Do not need an onsite administrator at every location Improved Operational Efficiency

13 Customer Feedback “Thanks to the consolidation with Windows Server 2003, we realized a cost savings of 33% in out IT budget. Investments in hardware, administration and overall project costs have been reduced.” Frederik Dumarey IT Administrator and project leader NMBS / SNCB
