In the Battle of Lewes, he was held hostage by the rebellious barons. He and his followers escaped a few months later. Soon after escaping, they joined a fight against Simon de Montfort. Edward I left on a crusade to the Holy Land. On his way back he got the news of his fathers passing. Edward was crowned as Westminster king on August 19, 1274.

In this visit William claimed that Edward put him down as the next heir to the thrown. Normandy was always under a constant threat. After repulsing two French invasions. Williams biggest capture would be Maine. The people of Maine at first were unwilling to except him as there leader. In 1063 William's army ravaged the land until he received their submission.

7 Continued William died on the morning of September 9,1087. Six weeks before, William had attempted to capture the French town of Mantes. He got sick from heat and exhaustion.
