Anabolic Steroids Jared White

What are Anabolic Steroids? A synthetic steroid hormone that resembles testosterone in promoting the growth of muscle. Such hormones are used medicinally to treat some forms of weight loss and (illegaly) by some athletes and others to enhance physical performance.

How do steroids work in the brain? Your body's testosterone production is controlled by a group of nerve cells at the base of the brain, called the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus controls appetite, blood pressure, moods, and reproductive ability. Anabolic steroids can change the messages the hypothalamus sends to the body. This can disrupt normal hormone function.

Side Effects Liver disease High Blood Pressure Acne Trembling Reduced sperm count and breast enlargement (males) Deepening of voice and facial hair growth (females)

Why do they take Steroids? In college and professional sports the competition is very high. Some athletes think that in order for them to perform the best and be the best, they have to use steroids. From my experience of playing baseball here at the college I can say first hand that the competition is very high. And that some people will do whatever it takes to compete at a high level.

How do they take it? Anabolic steroids are usually taken orally or injected into the muscles, although some are applied to the skin as a cream or gel. Doses taken by abusers may be 10 to 100 times higher than doses prescribed to treat medical conditions.

Collegiate sports We live in a socity where our athletes arent patient. They want results now. This has caused problems in collegiate athletics and has made it so even our young college athletes are looking to become bigger faster and stronger. The NCAAstarted testing division 1 and 2 schools in 1990. Even with the NCAA’s testing, colleges still do their own testing as well.

Professional Sports By the 1970’s and 80’s a lot of trainers on NFL teams were administering the steroids. Anywhere from 50 to 90 percent of NFL football players were using steroids at this time. All sports were affected by steroids, one of the big ones being baseball.

Baseball and Steroids The suspicion of steroids in baseball came when all the homeruns were being hit. The number of homeruns sky rocketed and became a huge part of the game. Owners of teams knew of these steroids, but slid it under the table. Why? Well homeruns draw more fans and more fans mean more money.
