5 Regret is chosen from Kate Chopin, a female American writer. About the author Kate Chopin(1851-1904) Born on February 8, 1851, She attended the St. Louis Academy of the Sacred Heart. When she married New Orleans native Oscar Chopin, she encountered the Creole( 克里奥的) culture which provided settings for many of her works. She wrote more than 100 short stories in the 1890s, and hosted a literary salon in her home at 3317 Morgan Street.

7 Read the story to answer the following questions: 1.How old is Miss Aurelie? 2.What does the story tell us about Miss Aurelie? 3.What does the last sentence of the first paragraph really mean? 50 years old She is an unmarried woman who lives all alone on a farm. A woman of little experience The child had made a mass At first she was angry that the little boy destroyed all flowers in the garden, but later she became fond of him. A woman who was not used to taking care of children. The children had upset the house and left disorganised.

10 3. In paragraph 6 we read that Miss Aurelie “no longer complained”. What were the things she would have complained about? Give three examples. She had to speak gently and nicely to the oldest girl instead of her usual manner, which was loud and commanding. She had to give the children a bath before going to bed. She had to tell the little boy a bed-time story. She had to sing sweet songs to the baby. Details

The unannounced and unexpected return of the mother. She knew that the mother would take the children away from her. 3. What was her feeling in the next paragraph? Sadness and loneliness.

12 4. Read the last paragraph of the story and answer the following questions. 1). Why did Miss Aurelie start crying? 2). What is the meaning of the title of this short story? What is regretted and by whom? She stared crying because she felt lonely. Regret means to feel sorry about something. In the end, Miss Aurelie regrets that she did get married and had not raised a family.
