The Curies Research by Maranda Swartz

(http://www.pbs.org/wnet/hawking/cosmostar/html/cstars_curies.html)http://www.pbs.org/wnet/hawking/cosmostar/html/cstars_curies.html Marie Sklodowska moved to Paris to be with her sister in 1891 and met the French chemist Pierre Curie 1894 then was married a year later. Together they studied radioactivity. (a term coined by Marie).

(www.nobelprize.org)www.nobelprize.org Marie and Pierre discovered two new elements: Polonium and Radium. Polonium was named after Marie’s country of birth. (Poland.) They were awarded a Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

(http://www.aip.org/history/curie/resbr3.htm)http://www.aip.org/history/curie/resbr3.htm Pierre discovered that Radium could kill tissue, this knowledge was used to treat cancer and other such diseases.

(http://people.chem.duke.edu/~jds/cruise_chem/nuclear/discovery.h tml)http://people.chem.duke.edu/~jds/cruise_chem/nuclear/discovery.h tml Marie and Pierre Curie had a word named after them. A Curie is a basic unit of measurement for describing radioactivity.

(http://www.chemistryexplained.com/Co-D./Curie-Marie- Sklodowska.html)http://www.chemistryexplained.com/Co-D./Curie-Marie- Sklodowska.html Polonium was the first element discovered via its property of radioactivity. Marie Curie used group separation and fractional crystallization to identify polonium.
