Art Nelson, Jr.AMS-02 Technical Interchange Meeting - JSC - January 2007 1 Ground Safety Status

Art Nelson, Jr.AMS-02 Technical Interchange Meeting - JSC - January 2007 2 Ground Safety Process –Prior to handling hardware or processing at KSC, NASA requires that all hardware and operations be reviewed and approved through the Ground Safety Process –Similar to the Three Phase Flight Safety Process –Must be completed and certified prior to hardware shipment to KSC –Ground Safety Data Package (GSDP) relies heavily on the Flight Safety Package (FSP). –Phase I GSDP submitted Feb 2002

Art Nelson, Jr.AMS-02 Technical Interchange Meeting - JSC - January 2007 3 Current Plan for the GSDP –Identify all hazards associated with the Ground Support Equipment (GSE) Example: Assembly/disassembly of hardware –Operational Hazards –Identify hazards specific to locations the GSE will be used. Example: Hazard Analyses for the different locations the GSE will be used –Identify Integrated Hazards Example: GSE fluids become contaminated, thus contaminated fluids enter Flight Hardware

Art Nelson, Jr.AMS-02 Technical Interchange Meeting - JSC - January 2007 4 Hazard Summary –Examples of some hazards –Failure of Lifting Equipment –Structural Failure –Flammability –Sharp Edges –Touch Temperature –Electrical Shock –Major Hazards to be addressed –Pressure Systems –Asphyxiation –Contamination of Flight fluids by GSE –Bonding/Grounding of hardware while on the pad

Art Nelson, Jr.AMS-02 Technical Interchange Meeting - JSC - January 2007 5 Information Needed to Complete GSDP –Procedures Each location and operation »Assembly/Disassembly »Transportation »Testing/Operations Identify which procedures are deemed hazardous »Most will be, GSE is cryogenic. –Drawings, Schematics and Photographs Electrical Power Distribution Circuitry (EPDC) Pressure Systems tables (similar to tables located in AMS- 02-F03 and AMS-02-05) Build Drawings

Art Nelson, Jr.AMS-02 Technical Interchange Meeting - JSC - January 2007 6 Information Needed to Complete GSDP –List of all safety related anomalies or failures Damage during shipping Test failures Damage during assembly/disassembly –Test TPS –Material Certifications –List of Collaboration Members and planned tasks during GSE Operations –Load ratings, capabilities and safety factor of lifting equipment being used at KSC

Art Nelson, Jr.AMS-02 Technical Interchange Meeting - JSC - January 2007 7 Status of the GSDP –Phase I completed in 2002 –Phase I/II GSDP NLT Fall 2007 Hazards identified, Hazard Reports currently being written Text portion of GSDP currently being updated Ground Safety Data Package relies heavily on the Flight Safety Package –Phase III ECD Early 2008

Art Nelson, Jr.AMS-02 Technical Interchange Meeting - JSC - January 2007 8 Forward Work Continue working with KSC GSRP. Identify all documents required Identify all training/certifications for personnel Complete the Phase II and III GSRP Reviews –Determining what classes, training and certifications the International Collaboration members are required to have in order to gain access to KSC. Ex: Hazardous Communication

Art Nelson, Jr.AMS-02 Technical Interchange Meeting - JSC - January 2007 9 Forward Work –Continue working with the AMS Project Identifying ALL GSE to be used at KSC –Both AMS and KSC provided hardware » tools, equipment, computers, etc Identifying procedures to be conducted at KSC Identifying hazards, controls and verifications for all operations of AMS at KSC Support GSE Testing –Generate list of Collaboration partners and their Certifications for accessing KSC and operating on the GSE and Flight Hardware

Art Nelson, Jr.AMS-02 Technical Interchange Meeting - JSC - January 2007 10 Current HRs Failure of AMS Lifting Equipment Structural Failure during Ground Ops Magnetic Field causes injury/damage to vehicle, flight hardware or surrounding structures Flammability/Toxicity Sharp Edges Electrical damage to facilities, orbiter or other equipment Shock to Ground Personnel Electrical Short causes fire Touch Temperature exceedance Rupture of pressurized components Failure of Servicing lines Exposure to high pressure venting gases Asphyxiation Ionizing Radiation Inadvertent tipping of ground hardware JSC 1230 form
