3   1929-1940  Economic Depression  Characterized by business failures, high unemployment, and falling prices  Worst depression in US history The Great Depression

4  1.Overproduction of goods a.Manufacturers produced more than they could sell 2.Speculation a.People were speculating on the stock market b.Buying stocks on credit 3.Unstable Banks a.Some banks invested depositors' money into unsound investments 4.Restricted international trade a.High tariffs made it hard to sell to other countries Causes of the Great Depression

5   “Black Tuesday”  October 29 th, 1929  Stock prices fell dramatically  The Stock Market crashed  The Crash set off a chain reaction  Investors lost savings  Companies could not sell stocks to raise money  Factories closed  Prices dropped  Unemployment grew  People lost their homes  Americans blamed President Herbert Hoover. Stock Market Crash

6   Didn’t provide direct relief  Believed it would undermine American’s “Rugged Individualism.”  Believed Depression would go away on it’s own.  Gave loans to banks and businesses  Believed wealth would “trickle down” to Americans President Hoover’s Response

17  Not everyone loved FDR or the New Deal  Conservatives  Liberty League  thought that FDR had gone too far  saw FDR as a dictator  Called FDR a “traitor to his class”  Liberals  Thought FDR didn’t go far enough  proposed giving government money directly to the needy Critics

18   Schechter v. U.S.  Overruled part of the New Deal on the grounds that the FDR had exceeded his constitutional powers  Roosevelt’s response  Court Packing Scheme  he proposed that the President be able to add new justices for every Justice over 70 years old  Scheme failed and the American public was outraged at the attempt. The Supreme Court
