1 Operation: Roll, Drop, Swoosh!! Engineering Fundamentals 151 Rube-Goldberg Device Section A2

4 Project Summary As a group, we decided that we’d like our project to complete a simple task while satisfying all credentials of solving an open - ended problem and showing at least three distinct steps of energy conversions.

5 Project Duties The system that we’ve developed performs a simple task of making 2 POINTS!! (a basket) First, a golf ball will roll down an incline falling through a funnel and into a cup. There is a hole in the bottom of the cup in which the golf ball will fall through. The golf ball will then tilt a seesaw causing a marble to launch into mid-air making a 2-POINTER!!

8 Energy Conversions Section 1- We first start with a golf ball on the top of a platform. The ball is then pushed down an incline into a bucket with a funnel attached to the base of a cup. There is a hole in the base of the cup. THIS IS A CHANGE FROM POTENTIAL TO KINETIC ENERGY. Section 2- The golf ball will then fall through the funnel of the cup onto a ruler. THIS IS A CHANGE FROM KINETIC ENERGY TO WORK BEING ADDED TO THE SYSTEM FOR THE NEXT SECTION OF OUR DEVICE.

9 Energy Conversions (con’d) Section 3- Once the marble hits the ruler that is attached to the incline… YOU WILL HAVE POTENTIAL ENERGY AND WORK BEING ADDED INTO THE SYSTEM FROM THE PREVIOUS SECTION OF OUR DEVICE. These two initial energies will then proceed to kinetic energy that launches a marble into the air. Section 4- Once the ball is launched into the air it will be shot into a basketball hoop. KINETIC ENERGY!!

10 Conclusions Through the various sections of our Rube- Goldberg Device, we were able to do something quite simple through a series of complex energy changes.
