3 Essential Questions 1.How does an author convey the truth within the context of his or her fiction? How do you think each of the authors we are reading might define truth? Do you agree or disagree with their visions of truth? 2.What role does truth play in the lives of the characters? Does it change over time? In your own life, what role has truth played? Has it changed over time? If so, how? 3.What is the relationship between truth, justice, and leadership? 4.How does the author or playwright portray issues of justice in the text and through the characters? How do you relate to these issues of justice? How have you come to understand justice? 5.How does literature provide guidance with which to move out of the middle ground so that we do not become a “white moderate”?

7 Do Now: Solve this riddle: “Thirty white horses on a red hill: first they champ, then they stamp, then they stand still.” Answer: Teeth

8 Oedipus Background story: Oedipus went to find out his true parentage. While finding this out he found out that he would kill his father and then marry his mother. He decided to never go back to his home lands and began his travel toward Thebes.

9 The Burial at Thebes is Seamus Heaney’s interpretation of Sophocles’ Antigone First written at about 442 BC Greek mythology

10 Setting The play takes place in Thebes, Greece during the year 442 BC

11 Characters Antigone Ismene Creon Haemon Tiresias Eurydice Chorus Guard Messenger

12 Themes Justice: The characters throughout the play are searching for justice. Their actions are done based of justice for the gods and for the dead. Honor: Each character in the play is fighting for honor. Some characters are fighting to honor their family members, others are fighting to honor their city.
