1 READ Time 9:44 – 10:04 AM Daily Purpose To provide time to read for enjoyment and to work on specific reading skills To discuss books and to create a community of readers To promote quality literature and to learn the habits of “good adult readers” Outcomes Students will independently read a significant number of books each year including both fiction and nonfiction. Students will read with fluency silently. Students will draw conclusions, make inferences, and deduce meaning from text. (Iowa Core Literacy)

2 Looks like Uninterrupted quiet time. Students reading silently books of their own choice. Textbook reading. Students abandoning a book if it isn’t enjoyable. Students reading an article provided by the teacher if they forget their books. Does not look like Browsing for a book. Going to the media center. Flipping through a magazine or newspaper. Reading a book of comic strips. Taking notes from a textbook or studying for a test. Completing a worksheet.

3 Looks like Choice of books to read. Talking with other students and teachers about the books you are reading. Learning something new. Becoming a more fluent, accurate and confident reader. Does not look like Judgment about reading choices. Being graded. Disrespect between classmates Struggling with a book that does not fit the reader.

4 Means Quality books are promoted and shared between teacher and students. The teacher explains how highly literate or good adult readers behave. Teacher reads silently or out loud to the class during READ. Students create book talk movies to promote books. Does not mean Teacher planning or grading during READ time. Teacher ignores student book choices and does not discuss the books with students. Teacher ignores students who are struggling to find the right book to read for enjoyment.

5 Looks like Reading or discussing books Watching book talks on Thursdays. Completing a “book end” activity such as AR test or book talk story board. Completing a book log. Does not look like Computer time except for AR quizzes Chatting Running Errands Study hall Class Party Treats
