2 M. Gilchriese 2 Carbon-Carbon Faceplates Problem appeared during rough cutting of carbon-carbon plates by vendor. Vendor did rough cut by hand with template and sharp knife on compliant surface, causing edge chipping. But cutting to final shape using milling machine at LBL gives good edges. We have accepted complete order and all pieces have been rough cut, and there is additional material stored by vendor. 10 faceplates have been final cut at LBL and dimensions inspected using automated procedures on SmartScope. All 10 are usable but need to fine tune cutting program to bring all dimensions into range of +/- 25 microns of nominal. Critical dimensions(holes) OK already. After fine tuning, will cut and inspect in batches of 20.

3 M. Gilchriese 3 Aluminum Tubes Production order of tubes was delivered already months ago. Bending and other tests all OK. But problems laser welding - see talk by Neal As a result of problems, ordered and have received tubing from old vendor for which laser welding tests were OK. These tubes must be etched(by about 50 microns) to correct wall thickness and are a slightly different size(75 microns in one direction) than other tubes. 10 of the “new, old” tubes have been prepared for annealing and etching by about now. Also must do laser welding tests.

4 M. Gilchriese 4 Fixtures and Other Tube bending fixture completed and used but will have to see if modifications(new inserts) needed if “old” tube dimensions used. Current estimate is that completion of all fixtures is about a month from now but clearly need to use them before declaring all fixtures ready for production. We have slowed down some this effort recognizing that critical path item is currently coolant fittings and same technical personnel have had to divert some effort to other parts of ATLAS(SCT modules).
