4  T: Listen to the passage (or read it silently) and see if you can answer this question:  What, according to the author, is the best way to overcome the fear of death as you get older?

5  What are some old people oppressed by?  Is there a justification for this feeling in the young?  Do some young men have reason to fear that they will be killed in battle?  Why might they justifiably feel bitter?

6  According to the writer, is the fear of death in an old man “somewhat abject and ignoble”?  What is the best way to overcome it (according to the writer )?  What should an individual human existence be like?  In what ways should it be like a river?  What happens to the river and its banks?

7  How do the waters flow?  Do they become merged with the sea?  Will an old man who can see his life in this way be afraid of death?  Why not?  If weariness increases, will the thought of rest be welcome?  How would the writer like to die?  Why would the writer like to die while still at work?
