3 Why Use an Encyclopedia? An encyclopedia is used when someone wants to find information about a person, place, or thing. Encyclopedias are separated into volumes, and each volume contains general topics, arranged in alphabetical order. Look for soccer in the S volume. Look for alligators in either the A volume or R volume for reptiles. Words are listed in alphabetical order in each volume of an encyclopedia.

4 Why Use an Atlas? Why Use an Atlas? An atlas is a book of maps, good if you want to find a specific place, such as a street, road, city, or state. Many people use an atlas when they are traveling, especially by car, to an unfamiliar place.

5 Why Use a Dictionary ? Why Use a Dictionary ? Use a dictionary to look up words. You will find all of the meanings, pronunciation, and parts of speech of a word in a dictionary. Sometimes the dictionary will model how to use the word in a sentence. The dictionary will have a picture for some nouns.

6 Why use a Thesaurus? In a thesaurus, you will find synonyms for many words. You will find a list of words with the same meaning as the word you looked up. Also, a thesaurus will often provide an antonym for the word. Can you guess my word? Synonyms: wonderful, magnificent, excellent, tremendous, cool, fantastic Antonyms: horrible terrible, awful Words are listed in alphabetical order in a thesaurus, too.

7 Other References What if we don’t have access to the internet? What if we need to look up a phone number or address of a friend or business? A phonebook will do. Words are listed in alphabetical order in a phonebook, too.

8 Dictionary, encyclopedia, thesaurus, and phonebook entries are in alphabetical order. Sections of the atlas are. Guide words help us locate exact words.

9 More References What if you need help cooking? A cookbook will give you recipes with directions and basic cooking tips.

10 What do you know? A situation will be described for the next couple of slides. Decide what type of reference material would best be used in this situation.

11 Challenge Question One My teacher has assigned a report on the country of Mexico. I need to find information on when the country began and who lived there in ancient times. Where would I find this type of information?

13 Challenge Question Number Two My family is planning a vacation to Arizona. We are going to the Grand Canyon. I am so excited! My father is trying to decide what interstate roads he needs to take. Or, how can he get there from Utah? What reference material should he use to find this information?

15 Challenge Question Number Three You had some yummy pancakes at your friend’s house and want to try them at home. But, you don’t know how to make pancakes! What will you use?

17 flinch? Challenge Question Number Four Milton is working on writing a sentence with each of his spelling words. He comes to a word he doesn’t know. Where can he find the definition of the word? What reference source should he use to find this information?

19 Challenge Question Number Five I am writing a creative story about my experience at the state fair. I want to find another word to use instead of saying great. Where can I find a word that means the same as great? What reference material would I use to find this information?

21 Challenge Question Number Six You are writing a weather report and can’t remember how to spell the long periods without rain. Is it d-r-o-u-t? That just doesn’t look right. What reference material should you use?

22 Dictionary You knew this one, didn’t you? (But, the big problem is, how do you look it up when you can’t spell it?) You do know the first 3 or 4 letters and they will get you close to your word. Then skim for your word. You’re pretty clever!

23 Challenge Question Number Seven Alex gave you her phone number two times already, but you LOST it, again! Where else could you find her phone number?

24 Did you get it? The internet might help you, but a phonebook is a safer bet. Give it a try!

25 Slough? Does it rhyme with cough? Challenge Question Number Eight Tracy is learning new vocabulary for a reading story for this week. What reference material should Tracy use to find a how to pronounce a strange new word?

26 You’re pretty clever! Dictionary You knew this one, didn’t you? (No, it doesn’t rhyme with cough.)

27 Challenge Question Number Nine Jane is working on a research paper for her third grade class. First, she must find out where her country is located and some of the major cities. What reference material would she use for this report?

28 Answer Atlas You’ll want to use the index for this one, too! Fantastic Job!!!!

29 Reference Materials Reference materials like encyclopedias, dictionaries, atlases, and thesaurus help us find information. It would be harder to find the information we need without these materials. The internet has all of these reference materials. So, if you don’t have these things at your home, you will be able to find them on a computer. Some internet sources are not reliable though. That’s why you need to be careful on the computer.
