There were hundreds of Native American cultures, from coast to coast and from Yukon to the Gulf of Mexico. The Native American tribes began to diminish when white settlers began to move onto their lands. Native Americans were eventually moved onto lands called reservations.

5 Facts  The Sioux are Native American and first nations people in North America. The term can refer to any ethnic group within the Great Sioux Nation or any of the nation’s many language dialects.  The territory covers some 200,000 km2 in the present day state of South Dakota and neighboring states.  Tatanka –lyotanka  A Hunkpapa Lakota chief and holy man under whom the Lakota tribes united in their struggle for survival on the northern plains, Sitting Bull remained defiant toward American military power and contemptuous, of American promises to the end.  As a young man, Sitting Bull became a leader of the Strong Heart warrior society and, later, a distinguished member of the silent eater, a group concerned with tribal welfare.
